Position is the most literal, latitude and longitude, or a local x,y grid. Spatial relationships are the quieter power, "which district neighbours another," "is there a dam upstream of this village," questions a map answers just by showing proximity, no calculation needed. Distance and area both depend entirely on the map's scale being correct.
