Draw the exact same town four different times, once for property ownership, once for elevation, once for population density, once from a satellite, and you'll get four maps that barely resemble each other. Same coordinates. Same real place. Completely different pictures, because each one was built to answer a different question.

Maps aren't classified by what they look like, they're classified by what question they were built to answer. That question decides everything else about how the map gets drawn.

This is why a good land acquisition project relies on cadastral data specifically, elevation and vegetation are irrelevant to who legally owns what. Meanwhile, that same plot's drainage design would need the topographic version instead, boundary lines mean nothing to where water actually flows.

Thematic Maps Come in Their Own Six Styles

Thematic maps deserve special attention because they're the most flexible family. The same population dataset can be shown as graduated colour, graduated symbol size, dot density, or a pie chart overlay, each technique better suited to a different kind of story the data is trying to tell.

The map isn't the land. It's the answer to one specific question about the land.

Understanding which family a map belongs to is often the fastest way to judge whether it's even the right tool for the job. A well-scoped GIS solutions project usually starts by identifying exactly which map family the client actually needs, long before any data collection begins.
