Change one ratio, 1:24,000 to 1:250,000, and the same map loses almost every detail it had.
A tiny fraction printed in the corner of a map, 1:50,000, does more work than almost anything else on the page. It quietly decides how much detail can survive, how big the map has to be, and whether a single centimetre represents a street or an entire district.
Scale is the ratio between distance on the map and the equivalent distance on the ground. A 1:4,00,000 scale means 1 cm on paper equals 4,00,000 cm, or 4 kilometres, in real life.

Here's the part that trips people up every time: a "large scale" map shows a small area with lots of detail, while a "small scale" map shows a huge area with almost none. The words feel backwards until you remember they refer to the size of the ratio's fraction, 1/24,000 is a much larger number than 1/2,50,000.
The Three Scale Categories
Survey of India, like most national mapping agencies, groups map scales into three practical bands.
Large: 1:50,000 and larger | Medium: 1:50,000 to 1:2,50,000 | Small: smaller than 1:2,50,000
A large-scale map, like a 1:5,000 city plan, can show individual buildings and property lines. A small-scale map, like a 1:10,00,000 national atlas page, can only show major cities and highways as generalized dots and lines. Neither is more "accurate," they're built for entirely different purposes.
Three Ways to Write the Same Ratio
The bar scale is the quiet hero here. If a map gets photocopied or resized digitally, a representative fraction like 1:24,000 becomes instantly wrong, but a bar scale drawn directly on the page shrinks or grows along with everything else, staying accurate no matter what.
Scale doesn't just shrink the earth. It decides what's even worth showing.
Why This Matters Beyond the Map
Scale decisions ripple all the way back to field survey work. A DGPS & RTK survey capturing centimetre-level accuracy is overkill for a map that will only ever print at a small, regional scale, and conversely, wildly insufficient for a large-scale cadastral plan. Matching survey precision to intended map scale is a decision made before fieldwork ever starts, and getting it wrong wastes either time or money.
