How to Measure Land Area Online in Five Steps

The tool is built for bright sunlight and non-technical hands, the way a good field instrument should be. Buttons are large, the satellite view is high resolution Esri World Imagery, and the live area panel updates the moment you move a point. Here is the whole workflow to measure land area online, start to finish:

Measure Land Area by Walking: Your Phone Becomes the Instrument

Bigha, Guntha, Vaar: Local Units Built In

Most online area calculators stop at acres and hectares, which is useless when your 7/12 extract or your grandfather's memory speaks in Vigho and Guntho. This tool speaks the local language of land. The conversion table below is the exact one wired into the calculator, based on the Gujarat standard where 1 Vigho equals 2428.08 square metres and 1 Guntho equals 121 square Vaar. If your district uses a slightly different Bigha, the multiplier is a single constant in the code, easy to adjust.

Common Questions About Measuring Land Area From a Phone

How accurate is this land area measurement tool?
Drawing on satellite imagery is usually accurate to within a few percent if you place corners carefully at visible boundary features. Walking the boundary depends on your phone's GPS, typically 3 to 5 metres per point in open sky, which averages out reasonably over a large field but matters more on small plots. For legal or construction-grade accuracy, a DGPS/RTK survey is the correct instrument.
Do my map drawings or photos get uploaded anywhere?
No. The page has no server component at all. Boundary math runs in your browser with Turf.js, photo EXIF is read locally, and every export file is generated in memory on your device and downloaded directly. Your boundary is saved only to your own browser's local storage so it survives a refresh.

Will the tool work offline in the field?
The measurement logic works entirely on your device, and your drawn boundary is auto-saved locally. Satellite tiles do stream from the imagery provider, so areas you have not viewed before need connectivity to display. Tiles you have already loaded typically remain visible from cache during short signal drops.
