Every EDM measurement travels through air, and air density bends with temperature and pressure. This is the standard atmospheric correction used inside total station firmware worldwide, and it is what this tool computes live from your inputs.

ppm = 286.34 − (79.531 × P) / (273.15 + T)
How this works: Live temperature and surface pressure are pulled from the Open-Meteo forecast API once a location is known, either from your device GPS, an IP-based location lookup as a fallback, or coordinates you enter manually. Why an EDM Atmospheric Correction Calculator Belongs in Your Field Kit

EDM atmospheric correction is the setting most total stations carry in a menu labeled ppm correction, and it exists because air density changes the speed of the infrared or laser signal an EDM sends out, so every measured distance needs a small scale correction before it can be trusted. Most instruments leave the factory calibrated to 15°C and 1013.25 hPa, and unless a crew opens that menu and updates it, the instrument keeps applying the correction for those reference conditions regardless of what the weather is actually doing on site.

Atmospheric Correction Error Without Manual Adjustment

On a genuinely hot day, well above that 15°C reference, especially combined with lower pressure at any real elevation, the delta between actual and reference ppm can climb into double digits. Left uncorrected, that error compounds across every leg of a traverse and shows up later as a scale mismatch nobody can trace back to a field cause. On construction survey work carrying millimetre tolerances, or any stakeout tied to structural grid lines, this is not a rounding error, it is real enough to fail a check. Anyone running topography control on a total station should verify this setting before the traverse closes, not after.
